The number one objective of every business should be (if it isn’t) to increase capital. Corporations spend massive amounts of revenue in order to target demographics, narrow down markets, and even capitalize off of social trending topics.
The recent trend now that has the internet on fire is (no, not Trump), Colin Kaepernick and his unexpected backing from Nike.
Nike recently announced that they have made Kap the face of the their 30th anniversary. Of course, in the times we are in, when the cultural tension can be cut with a knife, this did not go well with certain people.
Thousands of people across the country immediately denounced the company and started burning shoes, apparel, etc. The outrage from some people spewed out over the social media airwaves as racial streams of lava. The ironic thing about it, in my opinion, is that the same reason Kap started this movement is the same reason these people are burning their apparel…. We have a right to protest what we don’t think is fair. Kap took a knee during the national anthem because of injustices, not in disrespect of the flag or the country. But, the founding fathers did give us the right to protest if we feel that things are not just in our society. When Kap simply takes a knee, which is his rite, it’s a major problem amongst a certain culture. However, the same people who oppose, do the same thing in protest of another person (Kapaernik) making a protest. Hypocritical actions at its finest is on display. The bottom line is that Kap took a knee because black men were getting murder by law enforcement and nothing was happening. Period. If this flag is suppose to stand for LIBERTY and JUSTICE, and I am suppose to stand and pledge allegiance, maybe taking a knee and giving the reason why I am taking a knee will bring awareness.
At least he didn’t burn anything, curse people, degrade people, or make people feel like they aren’t welcome in this country.
However, I digress. This is not the reason for this blog. But, background info had to be provided in order to get the full jist of the message.
Nike, the global conglomerate that it is, is no fool. On the plane of time that we are on presently, what better way to capitalize than to tie a feed into the cultural friction that the world is currently devoured in? At this point, 24-72 hours after it’s announcement, Nike has recouped all funding put aside to fund this project. Why? Because they “capped.” Capped as in capitalized off of the situation.
In no way am I saying that Nike was not sincere in their decision. It takes courage to make a stand like that in our present time of existence. However, the thought still remains that there are no coincidences.
I personally think that Nike got it right. WIN/WIN. Support what’s right and get money while doing it.
