A Confirmation of The Ages: Brett Kavanaugh… Friend or Foe?

While many people are engaged in the start of football season, getting back to work from their summer vacation, or just bogged down with work, the most important decision of the next 30 years is taking place and has been since Tuesday.

What decision you ask? It can’t be the presidential election because we know how that transpired. It cannot be the midterm elections because they are not due to start until November. Is it the decision on who the writers want to write off of the sitcom “Power?” Or, is it perhaps what Cardi B is going to name her baby. Nope, it’s not that either. Then what is it? It’s the Confirmation hearing for our next supreme court justice, Mr. Brett Kavanaugh. Many people have never heard of Kavanaugh nor do they have a clue about how much power he will ultimately possess.

So… Let’s talk government, School House Rock edition.

The Congress make the laws, the Senate helps write and pass the law, the judicial system enforces the law. However, due to our congressmen not doing their job as far as law making is concerned (in fear of losing their seats), they choose to stonewall on most decisions and punt to the Supreme Court and let them decide on the topic at hand. Therefore, literally speaking the Judicial System, moreover the Supreme Court is the highest office in the land. Also, it is encouraged for you to duly note that a Supreme Court Justice is a LIFETIME appointment. You are in the seat until you check out, literally.

Being in a position like this should be, if it is not, one of if not,  the most honorable office in the land. To identify and confirm a Judge to the Supreme court should be a very stringent and diligent process making sure that the individual has no bias or prejudices whatsoever when observing and preserving the law. This is where things get interesting.

The Supreme Court is comprised of 9 Justices. Right now, 4 judges are conservative in nature and 4 are liberal in nature. If Kavanaugh is confirmed he will be the swing vote in deciding all decisions that come before the court. This is where the problem lies. Democrats make the argument that Kavanaugh was hand selected by Donald Trump (Presidents nominate SCJ’s once a seat becomes vacant. Senate confirms said nominee) for two specific reasons: (1.) To overturn Roe vs. Wade and secure his base, but more importantly (2.) To help bring an end to the SCOTUS investigation, and if worst meets worst, give President Trump a get out of jail free card.

The confirmation hearings were very perplexing. Democrats claim that they were dumped with 42,000 pages of documents the night before the hearing was to start on Kavanaugh and said that it was completely unfair to not give them more time to look over said documents. They also claim that the GOP only released 10% of Kavanaugh’s documents. The GOP however, states that they have received well over 500,000 pages of documents, a number larger than all of the last 5 candidates combined. Protestors shouted their disapproval of the SCJ selection each day of the hearing with prolife rants, civil rights chants, and many other outbursts in their displeasure of the GOP and how they are handling the process. Today is the final day of the hearings. I haven’t had a chance to tune in today, but I can imagine that today is no different.

It is a crazy time we are living in and some people will do anything to stay in power. Others will do anything to usurp power. While those in the middle just want to keep their power on. I fall into the middle part with the majority of you.

I’m not sure how this will end. To be confirmed or not to be confirmed, that is the question. However it goes, we will be impacted by this decision for the next 30 years.

God Bless America.
